IN MEMORIAM: GEORGE N. PARKS
George N. Parks (1953-2010)

In 1970 George Parks taught his first drum major workshop at West Chester University and founded the Drum Major Academy 4 years later. Every year over 3000 high school students have spent their summers learning from him--learning conducting, marching, teaching techniques, and learning life skills.

George had a profound impact upon the lives of everyone he touched through every thing he did. Whether it was here with the Drum Major Academy, home with his beloved UMASS Minuteman Marching Band, at a concert band festival or with the Reading Buccaneers, George brought the best out of every person who ever encountered him. The nation's foremost authority on the art of drum majoring, George was a true exemplar who brought 40 years of teaching and performing experience to the Drum Major Academy.

Although George passed away September 2010, and he is sorely missed, thousands of new drum majors continue to share in his legacy thanks to the hard work, dedication and expertise of the DMA staff.
